What Causes Aging of the Skin?
One of the cardinal signs of aging is dry,
leathery and wrinkled skin.
There are two types of skin aging: intrinsic and photoaging. Intrinsic
aging happens to all of us and is characterized by softening of the skin
with loss of elasticity associated with advanced age. Photodamaged skin
is pigmented, blotchy, rougher, wrinkled and is loose (has less
elasticity). Most of these effects are due to ultraviolet light emitted
from the sun. People with darker complexions usually have less
photodamage because the pigment in their epidermal cells absorbs
ultraviolet light shielding the skin from damage. If you look at your
skin in a non-sunexposed area(your forearm is good) and
compare it with your sun exposed skin you will see the difference
between photoaging and intrinsic aging.
There are two basic types of wrinkles: those associated with muscular
expression and fine wrinkles associated with photodamage. Look in the
mirror and make an exaggerated smile, these are the wrinkles of muscular
expression. If you have crow's feet, laugh lines or horizontal lines on
your forehead these are also associated with muscular expression.
Muscular expression wrinkles tend to be deep and pronounced. Now look at
your central face, such as your cheek- here you may see fine lines that
become more prominent with slight muscle movement. These are the
wrinkles of photodamage. The texture of photodamaged skin is not as
smooth as non-sunexposed skin. In addition sun-exposed skin
characteristically has freckles, fine blood vessels and is dry or dull.
In advanced photodamage, the skin is leathery, and has a "chicken skin" look and a loose, thin, feel to it.
